Waves

I find it interesting that we can perceive so much from a simple wavelength. We can see and hear essentailly because of waves that float around in the air. Take music for example; many people can or have been emotionally moved by music, it can make them cry, laugh or become angry. All of these feelings generate due to the music which is made up of waves in the air. I understand that interperation of the song, personal experience and compostional rules all interact with how people feel about a song, but still...their just wavelengths. That means the music doesnt mean anything until it's heard by someone, just like how an apple isnt red until we see it. It's all just perception.

  1. That's an interesting way to look at it, and it makes sense. One person could fing a love song beautiful and cute, while another thinks it's stupid. It all has to do with our past experiences and how we interpret things. It's strange to think that way, because then everything has so many meanings. I guess that is just perception

  2. Yes like with music it is all in our ears and brains. Sound is just vibrations that all the parts of the ear and some parts of the brain pick up and turn the vibrations into what we hear as the music.

  3. I agree, music is all about perception. You will not enjoy a piece of music that you have no connection do at all as much as one you know and understand. Like the Titanic theme, do you really think it would be such a popular song if people didn't think of that tragic love story every time they heard it? Probably not. It would just be Celine Dion singing about people being in her heart. Without jack and rose, Celine has nothing.

  4. I also find it interesting that color is just light hitting objects, and how more or less light changes the tones.

  5. I agree. Before this unit I had no clue that color gives of waves. We touched it a bit in Physics but we never got in depth in it and it was never mentioned that much. It was also really interesting how Relative Height and Relative Size has so much affect on someone looking at the picture or the drawing. For example the free response question asked about the same thing and it is really interesting what an artist can do that many people would find it astonishing.
